Levittown Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
What Can I Do If An Opossum Is Inside My House, Bedroom, Kitchen, Etc…?
What to Do When An Opossum Enters the Home
Opossums can enter your home if they find a way in. If you left the door open, if they found a way through the attic, or if they found another access point, they may find their way into your home.
An opossum on the property in general is a terrible thing. They carry diseases and they can cause damage, like any other wild animal. Once they get into your kitchen, living room, bedroom, or other area of the house, though, it becomes far more troublesome.
They are impossible to ignore and you never know what is going to happen. Knowing how to handle this situation when it arises can save you time and energy, and potentially money.
Isolate It
You do not want the opossum having free reign around your home. When it gets in and can walk anywhere, it will. It will try to look for a place to rest or find safety, and it may not have an easy time with that.
With you, and potentially others and other animals, in the house, it is likely to start feeling uncomfortable and on edge. It is going to scurry and try to get away from what it views as predators.
This will create chaos in your house. Until that opossum is out, you will have a dangerous situation. Getting it out starts with isolating it to a single room so that it cannot move around freely, which would make it harder to capture.
Set an Escape Route
Help the opossum get out of the property by setting up a direct escape route. From the room where you have the opossum stuck to where you want it to escape, build a pathway. Make it difficult for the opossum to go anywhere but down the path.
Using a broom, try to push it down the path gently. Do not harm it or get too close. While opossums do not want to fight, it might feel threatened and cornered.
Trapping
If you cannot get the opossum out through the path, you can always rely on trapping. Trapping works well with opossums and is easy to set up. In most instances, it can get the opossum out quickly.
Once an opossum enters your home, you have options for removing it. It is possible to get it out and to regain control of your property.
